Dear Parishioners,

Happy Thanksgiving! This coming Thursday, our nation celebrates our annual day to give thanks for God’s blessings upon us. This day has its origins in a celebration of thanksgiving in Plymouth colony in 1621, but we owe our annual day primarily to a proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The fact that Lincoln issued this in the midst of the terrible period of our Civil War has always struck me. It was a time of terrible distress and suffering and danger, yet in his great wisdom Lincoln called upon all Americans to give thanks. He knew despite the darkness that there was so much good, so many blessings and that it was vitally important to see the light in the darkness and to remind ourselves of that great goodness.

While the situation at the time of Lincoln was worse, we too live in a time of great discord and difficulties. How important then that we pause to remember our blessings, to give thanks for them, and to put that gratitude into action by sharing of our blessings with those less fortunate.

As I reflect on my blessings, one of the greatest at this time in my life is being a part of this parish community. I thank God and the Archbishop for missioning here to be your pastor, to share in your lives, in your joys and struggles, to be inspired by your faith and to journey with Christ and you on the pilgrimage of growing in faith, hope and love. In my three-plus years here I have been abundantly blessed. It is an honor to serve as your pastor, and I know I can also speak for Fathers Alberto and Ethan in saying that we feel so blessed to serve in this parish community. We love you and we pray for you.

And so, as Thanksgiving dawns, I thank you and I thank God for you. I wish you many, many blessings!

Let me also express my gratitude to you for the wonderful response to the invitation to take part in the Giving Thanksgiving outreach and the Assist a Family for Christmas sponsored by our St. Vincent de Paul Society. There is still time this weekend to buy a meal voucher for Thanksgiving or to sign up to assist a needy family at Christmas.

May Jesus, who in the Gospels is regularly seen giving thanks (e.g. Matthew 15:36; Mark 8:6; Luke 22:17-19; John 11:41), deepen our spirit of gratitude. Mary, who was so wonderfully aware of being richly blessed by God, inspire us to join her in proclaiming the greatness of the of the Lord (Luke 2:46-55).
